The project originated from discussions between President José Ramos-Horta and Ian Martin—Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the 1999 Popular Consultation and Head of UNAMET—concerning the imperative to immortalize the true history of the liberation path. Production was spearheaded by Ian White.

“The liberation struggle does not belong solely to the leadership, but to the entire nation. Although this film cannot capture every single individual’s sacrifice, Timor-Leste will never forget the martyrs and all those who gave their lives for independence,” Xanana Gusmão remarked.
