BANGKOK — Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão expressed deep appreciation for Thailand’s unwavering development cooperation extended to Timor-Leste over the years during a high-level bilateral meeting on Friday.
Held at Government House in Bangkok, the meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul focused on strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across economic development, trade, investment, defense, education, public health, and human resource development.
Prime Minister Xanana also conveyed heartfelt solidarity from the Government and people of Timor-Leste to the Thai people affected by recent severe flooding.
“We discussed practical measures to expand cooperation in economic development, trade, investment, defense, education, and public health. We warmly welcome the continuity of the Three-Year Development Cooperation Plan, which will prioritize areas where Thailand possesses valuable technical expertise and experience,” stated PM Xanana.
A key priority for Timor-Leste is fostering a productive, diversified economy and creating job opportunities for its citizens. Consequently, Timor-Leste seeks to promote bilateral trade and investment, particularly in tourism, hospitality, and agriculture.
As Timor-Leste prepares to assume the ASEAN Presidency in 2029, the Government welcomes Thai investment in infrastructure, including hotels and tourism facilities, to support preparations for major ASEAN meetings in Dili. PM Xanana thanked Thailand for providing over 800 scholarships and training opportunities to Timorese officials and students since 2001.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul congratulated Timor-Leste on its full ASEAN membership, reaffirming Thailand’s steadfast support during regional integration. The meeting concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing a Bilateral Consultation Mechanism.
